Reborn to Flourish, Part 5: Violence

"Reborn to Flourish" is an exposition of Proverbs 6:16-19—a passage that identifies seven things opposed to God's heart. At the center of the passage is the love God has for His children and His call for us to return to Him. The series will work backward through the list, identifying discord as a fruit that comes forth from a heart rooted in pride and other fleshly concerns. It will then emphasize God's transformational love that will revitalize the root and send forth tender branches and bountiful fruit.
Topics covered in Part 5: Today we’re going to go deeper toward the root of the bad tree that bears the fruits of discord and discuss some of those wicked things we might do in ignorance on account of deception, as well as their remedy. The lies the enemy speaks—temptations, twisted words, and the like—often lead us toward an initial sin such as anger or resentment, and that sin then multiplies without correction received with humility and repentance. That sin, whatever it may be, causes violence against the peace of God's kingdom. We might be tempted to sin against our brothers, holding them in judgment for their actions against us or against others, but judgment belongs to the LORD, and He will repay. In fact, only God is qualified to judge His people in the hope that we might return to Him. With hearts full of pride, we risk shedding blood and calling ourselves into judgment when we have a posture of superiority toward others. Finally, whenever we allow anger to grow into resentment and ultimately hatred, this can sometimes leads to actual murder. Rather than get caught up in this wicked path toward death, we ought to make peace with all people, not only loving our neighbor as ourselves, but also going out of the way to love our enemies. God desires all men everywhere to return to Him.
